A summer ago, veteran sharpshooter Ray Allen made the decision to bypass an extension with the Boston Celtics to sign with the Miami Heat. In turn, Allen took less money and a shorter contract for the opportunity to win another ring. Talk about a slap in the face to Boston — an organization in which he already owns a ring with.
The Heat are currently tied with the San Antonio Spurs through two games of the NBA Finals and Allen is in the exact position in which he envisioned himself. With that being said, Allen also envisions himself winning these NBA Finals and anything short of that may very well be considered a disappointment.
Could Allen’s decision potentially set off a trend moving forward, however?
Well, on Monday, news emerged that Chauncey Billups would consider a move to the Heat this summer. Now, while Miami remains in the midst of their NBA Finals run, there is no telling on whether or not the two sides would have mutual interest. With that being said however, Billups is making his intentions clear — he wants to win a title.
That’s just the general stereotype that Miami has become with the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. They are going to be in the title hunt each year, as long as they remain intact. So, Billups is the one stepping up now heading into the summer of 2013.
Will he be this year’s Ray Allen? Possibly, it’s certainly an option if the Heat decide to pursue the veteran guard.
