Should Milwaukee Bucks Pursue O.J. Mayo in 2013 NBA Free Agency?
The Milwaukee Bucks must make some moves in free agency if they want to be completive during the 2013-14 NBA season. Obviously, the Bucks must keep at least one, preferably two, of their three guards that could be suiting up with a different team next season. Depending on what happens Milwaukee should consider pursuing shooting guard O.J. Mayo during the 2013 NBA free agency.
There are several teams reportedly interested in signing Mayo to a multi-year deal, which is exactly what he is looking for in his next contract. If the Bucks want to bring him to Milwaukee they will have to, at the very least, give him $4.2 million per season. There is no reason Mayo would sign for any less, especially after the numbers he put up last season.
The 25-year-old (another reason why he is worth acquiring) averaged 15.3 points, 4.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 35.5 minutes per game last season with the Dallas Mavericks. He also managed to convert 44.9 percent of his 12.5 field goal attempts per game and 40.7 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
If Milwaukee allows Brandon Jennings to walk, something that seriously must be done if the Bucks want to improve, Mayo could suit up at both guard positions depending on what the team needs. However, if Milwaukee decides to keep Jennings because they are unable to hang on to Monta Ellis, Mayo could excel in the backcourt with Jennings. The reason for this is because he is capable of creating his own shots and is a top-notch scorer who is consistent with his shooting, which is something Milwaukee’s guards struggled mightily with last season.
It might take a little extra to get Mayo to play for the Bucks considering the team lacks chemistry right now. With that being said, they are a team who reached the playoffs last season and are certainly capable of accomplishing the same goal in 2013-14.
