On Thursday afternoon, Rivers was linked in a report to the Los Angeles Clippers, which suggested that the two sides have a “mutual interest” at this point. The connection doesn’t come as much of a surprise, especially considering that it has surfaced in the past. In fact, according to Baxter Holmes of the Boston Globe, Rivers just might be the top choice for free agent point guard, Chris Paul.
In all however, Rivers want Kevin Garnett to join him on the west coast. The tandem wants to win a championship — and that could be where they’d hope to do so. It’s all dust in the wind at this point, but things are certainly starting to pick up. Rivers is under contract with Boston for the next three years at $21 million, so L.A. would need to first gain permission (which has already been denied by Danny Ainge) and then probably compensate or complete a trade in order for all of this to occur.
Now however, the speculation is going a bit further. If Rivers did opt to leave Boston, who would the Celtics’ next target?
Well, the name Vinny Del Negro is already being thrown into the mix. According to Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald, he could fill a need if the dominoes fall a certain way. Once again though, just a rumor, just a name — Rivers is still the coach of the Celtics at this time.
Let’s pump the brakes on a replacement until their is actually a vacancy in Boston, if that is even to be the case.
