Just when it appears that Brian Shaw might be the frontrunner for the open coaching job at the Los Angeles Clippers, a new name has surfaced as a possible candidate.
Actually, it’s an old name: Doc Rivers.
The veteran Boston Celtics coach has an interest in the Clippers and vice-versa, according to various reports. It’s that the Clippers would be interested. Why Rivers would want to leave Boston might be confusing, although the chance to start a new challenge at a franchise in Los Angeles that is going in the right direction could be very appealing to Rivers.
But since he’s currently under contract with Boston, Rivers’ release from the Celtics would cost the Clippers a pretty penny. It might be worth it. The Clippers continue to struggle in finding a coach who can take the team a long way in the playoffs, and Rivers would give the Clippers a major shot in the arm in reaching their ultimate goal.
The Clippers aren’t that far away, obviously, from NBA title contention. They need to retain some of their best players, especially Chris Paul, but it’s not a bad idea to bring in a coach who knows what it takes to put together a title contender.
Rivers is obviously in that category, but what may really appeal to him is the potential for the Clippers to win a title compared to where he’s presently at in Boston. The Clippers could wind up having Doc Rivers as coach, but it depends on how steep a price they want to pay.
