The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Clippers are engaged in what could be a blockbuster trade that could send Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett to the west side. According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, if Rivers goes to the Clippers then Garnett would be willing to waive his no trade clause to join his coach.
In return the Celtics are said to be asking for DeAndre Jordan, Eric Bledsoe and multiple picks.
If this move should happen then Paul Pierce could go to the Clippers as well if he is bought out. Talks have stalled a bit, as the Clippers do not want to part ways with Bledsoe but are willing to part with Jordan.
This trade, should it happen, would benefit both sides. The Celtics get Jordan, who would add size to their team. They get a guard to fill in for the injured Rajon Rondo. Bledsoe also can be a nice scoring option and the Celtics can then look to possibly trading Jason Terry. This trade allows the Celtics to get younger and shed some salary.
Losing Rivers would a big blow for the Celtics, but Rivers has been a loyal guy for nine years and it could be time to move on. Rivers has done all he can for the Celtics, he delivered a title and helped the Celtics during their rebuilding phase.
If Rivers should leave, expect to hear about Lionel Hollins and George Karl as possible replacements. Brian Shaw, whose name has been linked to about every coaching position available, would also be a good candidate as a replacement.
The end of the “Big 3” era is now underway in Boston, and it will be interesting to see what unfolds over the next few days.
