2013 NBA Draft: Orlando Magic Can’t Go Wrong If They Pick Ben McLemore

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The best bet for the Orlando Magic picking No. 2 in the NBA draft is Ben McLemore of Kansas. The way things are going, that’s hardly a slam dunk but still has a very good chance of happening, barring a trade for the first two picks.

The consensus is that the Cleveland Cavaliers will go for Nerlens Noel with the first pick. If that’s the case, the Magic likely will go for McLemore, considered the best shooting guard in the draft. For argument’s sake, say that Orlando does draft McLemore … what does he bring to the table for the Magic?

He’s a player the Magic can focus around, along with a couple of others, for building a future nucleus. At age of 20, he has plenty of untapped potential, but he has impressed others with what he can do. If the Magic would wind up with McLemore as many draft experts say they will, he’s likely to be a starter and a very valuable contributor. That’s how good McLemore is — he’s a shooting guard and a good one.

For the season, McLemore shot 49.5 percent from the floor, 42 percent in 3-pointers and 87 percent in free throws. Those statistics right there draw coaches’ immediate attention.

What the Magic like about him is that McLemore is considered the purest jump shooter in the country.  They like the fact that he’s a good rebounder for being 6-foot-5 and has a super quick release on his jumper. The only deterrent from scouts is that he lacks confidence at times, which isn’t exactly what the Magic need in the top draft pick.

Many predict McLemore could eventually be an NBA all-star. If he does, he’s could be wearing a Magic uniform.
