New Orleans Pelicans Thrilled With Trey Burke After Workout
The New Orleans Pelicans finally got a chance to see point guard Trey Burke up close during a workout on Friday at the Alario Center. There is no question the Pelicans were thrilled with what they witnessed, which is more reason to believe Burke will end up in New Orleans when he is selected sixth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft.
“It was a good workout,” Pelicans head coach Monty Williams said, according to NOLA.com. “He’s a point guard that can score the ball and he’s got really good vision. He’s put on some muscle and certainly, he can add some speed to our team, but you don’t know how that’s going to translate yet because they’re so young.
“You don’t know what’s going to happen when you have to go against the best in the NBA. But he is a good player.”
Burke is widely considered the best point guard in the entire draft class. The fact that he is athletic, quick and has a tremendous jump shot are all reasons why New Orleans believes he can have a huge impact on the team. Not to mention, his unbelievable leadership skills is another reason why the organization is desperately hoping he falls to them.
The two-year player averaged 18.6 points, 6.7 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He also shot 46.3 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from beyond the arc last season. There is no question the Pelicans could use his firepower and ball handling skills at the point guard position.
The good news is Burke wants to be drafted by New Orleans as much as they want to have him.
“With the young team that the Pelicans have, I definitely think I can come in and make an impact right away and help this team win,’’ Burke told NOLA.com. “I would love playing with Anthony Davis. He runs the court and plays the game with 100 percent effort, blocks shots and he’s going to go up when you can throw it to him.
“It’s a point guard’s dream to play with a player like him.”
