The Bobcats, as much as any team, could use Nerlens Noel of Kentucky. They don’t need to be drafting another guard unless they figure on unloading Gerald Henderson, Kemba Walker or Ben Gordon. Those are all possibilities, but for now, the need for the Bobcats is up front.
They could offer the Cavaliers their first pick this season, which is number-four overall, plus their top draft choice in 2014, which is likely to be a lottery selection once again, and another top-line player that Bobcat coach Steve Clifford figures is expendable.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was such a disappointment last season and how much progress he’ll make for 2013-14 is probably something the Bobcats don’t want to rely on too heavily. They don’t want to trade Josh McRoberts, and Bismack Biyombo or Gordon may satisfy the Cavaliers who might ask for Henderson or Walker.
But the number-four pick the Bobcats have and their number-one pick for 2014 might attract the Cavaliers enough that Biyombo or Gordon would be all they would have to forfeit.
Nerlens Noel in the Bobcats’ lineup? There’s no guarantees but the potential for the Bobcats would be better if that happens. Steve Clifford wouldn’t mind it. But the Bobcats are going to have to take on a new touch of boldness for this to happen.
If they stick with number-four, the chance to get a top notch inside player is limited. There certainly won’t be another Nerlens Noel to pursue.
