Charlotte Bobcats Should Not Bring Back Jeff Adrien Next Season

The Charlotte Bobcats were grasping at straws for most of the 2012-2013 NBA season, trying to find something… anything that would improve their team. Towards the end of the year, after they had traded for him, they even played the little-heralded Josh McRoberts in a featured frontcourt role. However, before McRoberts’ arrival, they gave the opportunity to little-known Jeff Adrien.

Adrien just finished his third season in the NBA and his first with the Bobcats. He started out the year in the D-League, but was recalled around 30 games into the season. By the end of the year he played in 52 games, including five starts, and played 13.7 minutes per game while averaging four points, 3.8 rebounds and 0.5 blocks per game on 42.9 percent.

Even as a starter, Adrien struggled to make a real impact. In his five starts he played 20 minutes per game, but averaged just seven points, 5.2 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game on 48 percent shooting. More than that, he was a sub-par defender, mostly due to the fact that he’s an undersized power forward at just 6’7”.

To the credit of Adrien, he always tried to provide Charlotte with energy whenever he stepped onto the floor. The issue, though, is the fact that he’s not big or skilled enough to truly make an impact on a team with as many problems as the Bobcats have.

Adrien is now an unrestricted free agent and the Bobcats have to decide whether or not they want to bring him back and continue developing him or if they would rather part ways and develop other players. Considering Adrien’s lack of productivity this season, the fact that he’s 27 years old, and that the Bobcats have a serious need in the frontcourt, they have to part ways with Adrien. Charlotte should look to add young big men through free agency or the draft and see if they can have more success than Adrien did this past season. There’s much more potential in doing that than there is in keeping Adrien around.
