Should Phoenix Suns Pursue Andrew Bynum in 2013 NBA Free Agency?
The Phoenix Suns must make some big moves in the offseason in order to improve on their horrendous 25-57 record, which was the worst in the Western Conference during the 2013 NBA season. Taking advantage of this year’s draft is certainly one way to improve the team in the ensuing years. However, the Suns must also look at free agency. One player in particular that Phoenix should pursue is center Andrew Bynum.
Obviously, there are several questions surrounding Bynum. His health is most definitely the biggest issue, which directly relates to his ability to play at a high level. The fact that he took the entire year off could mean that he has lost a step. At the same time, the 25-year-old has been working hard to get back in shape in order to impress some teams in the offseason.
Bynum is someone that could have a huge impact for the Suns. He certainly would be a difference maker in the paint, especially if he was able to put up similar numbers to his last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. The reason why it is important for teams interested in him to look at the 2011-12 season is because that was the first time he stayed consistently healthy.
The seven-year player averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.9 blocks per game. He also converted 55.8 percent of his shots in 60 starts. There is no question Phoenix could use that kind of production out of the center position.
The Suns should be looking to trade center Marcin Gortat for some draft picks. That means there would be a clear need for a center next season. Phoenix should offer Bynum a decent deal in order to shy other teams away, but at the same time, it is imperative they do not go overboard.
