USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo announced on Monday that Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard was named to the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s National team mini-camp roster.
Lillard will be among 27 NBA players who will be at the camp, which takes place July 22-25 in Las Vegas. National Team head coach Mike Krzyzewski will be directing the camp.
Lillard be getting a lot of attention and recognition as among the elite players following a season in which he set an NBA record for 3-pointers for a rookie in a season with 185. The camp will show how he competes against other elite young players in the league.
As Lillard is one of only four NBA players to have a least 1,500 points and 500 assists in a seaso as he did last year, he deserves all the praise he gets. The other players were Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Russell Westbrook, putting Lillard in a tremendous group of elite players.
The practices are close to the general public.
Lillard averaged 19.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists last season. Still weighing heavily on his mind is the fact that the team lost its last 13 games and finished at 33-49. He wants to showcase his talents in the NBA playoffs next season.
The Trail Blazers have four draft picks coming up next week and have a chance to bolster the team’s talent level, but Lillard will have to play like a veteran despite being only a second-year NBA player. He may be surrounded by rookies next season.
