2013 NBA Free Agency: Could New Orleans Pelicans Land Chandler Parsons?
With the Houston Rockets so tunnel-visioned on landing Dwight Howard and Chris Paul this summer, let’s hope they don’t forget they have their own free agents to worry about. While they would like to enter July with the most cap room possible, there’s one guy they cannot afford to lose.
Chandler Parsons is becoming one of the better wing players in the NBA and he is set to become a free agent July 1st. The New Orleans Pelicans have their own need at the position as it looks like Al-Farouq Aminu may be leaving them.
The Pelicans are said to be looking at drafting Anthony Bennett out of UNLV, so the small forward position likely won’t be addressed in the NBA Draft. Going after Parsons would be a smart move that could prove very beneficial in the long run.
Last season with Houston, Parsons averaged 15.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and a steal per game. Shooting the ball at nearly 49 percent from the field, he showed that even though he’s only in his second season he can contribute offensively at a high level.
New Orleans will most likely go after a small forward via free agency and Parsons could be a potential candidate. Obviously, many teams would like to bring in Andre Iguodala who recently opted out of his deal with the Denver Nuggets. But a team like New Orleans probably won’t be able to lure him in as he will want to win now.
Parsons could be arguably one of the top options at the position this offseason. Paul Pierce will likely go to a contender, so he’s out of the question. Beyond that fact, Parsons remains one of the best overall small forwards on the market. If the Pelicans can find a way to get him to New Orleans, they will have found a gem.
