2013 NBA Draft: Could Golden State Warriors Trade Expiring Contract for Pick?

With the 2013 NBA Draft now a day away, the Golden State Warriors have not yet made any moves to get themselves a pick. There have been rumors of moving into the draft, but nothing official or too serious has come of it yet.

However, with only a day to go before the big night, the Warriors could find their way into a pick if they could find a team willing to take on an expiring contract in 2014.

Next summer will be a huge year for free agency with guys like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh all potentially entering the market among others. There may be a team out there who doesn’t have quite the financial status to compete next summer and could look into clearing some room next year while also getting themselves an asset to contribute this year.

An interesting prospective trade could involve Andrew Bogut who will make $14 million this season. Bogut could be more of an asset to a team looking to compete this year while also clearing space next summer. In 2014, he will also be a free agent.

In a draft that some look at as mediocre and worse than most drafts in recent history, there could be some teams out there willing to deal a pick for a guy like Bogut. When healthy, he can give you double-doubles on the regular and block a couple shots every game.

With Golden State, though, his injuries have again hampered his production. For one year, there could be a team out there who would want to use him and see how it works out. Worst case scenario, the team that takes on his contract would be free of it in 2014.

The Warriors are young and on the rise, and another young prospect could do the team good especially down low. Getting sure thing – health wise – could work out better for them rather than keeping a $14 million deal that has not given the team optimum health.

You never know what happens on draft night, and I would not count out the possibility the Warriors make a deal happen to get themselves a pick or two.
