Philadelphia 76ers: Andrew Bynum is Done With Rehab, On His Way Out?
It’s one thing to miss an entire season and be a level-headed former MVP. It’s another thing to be an inconsistent, attention-drawing and immature youngster and miss a season. The Philadelphia 76ers brought in Andrew Bynum last year via trade in hopes he could be the consistent big man he has shown the potential to be, but that didn’t even come close to happening.
Bynum spent all year on the sidelines dealing with injuries and rehabbing surgery. The highlights of his season were capped off by ridiculous haircuts and awkward faces captured on camera. Now that the free agency period is approaching quickly, Bynum could be gone before even suiting up in a 76ers uniform.
With the 2013 NBA Draft upon us, Bynum’s situation could grow clearer. The 76ers already have Spencer Hawes as one of their big men, and he has done a satisfactory job in the minutes he has been given. Many have predicted Philadelphia to go after a center with their first pick, and if that happens, Bynum would be all but gone.
If I am in the front office, I have a tough call in front of me. The potential is there with Bynum, but injuries and maturity are definitely huge issues with him. When healthy and dialed in, Bynum can give you a double-double in his sleep. His long body gives him quite the advantage over most centers on the boards and when blocking shots.
The temptation to draft guys like Cody Zeller, Kelly Olynyk, Mason Plumlee or Steven Adams may be too tough to resist. If the 76ers wind up grabbing one of these top prospects, I would guess they will let Bynum walk and try to address other needs via free agency with the money they save.
In less than 24 hours we will know for sure where the franchise is headed in regards to Bynum. It may not be a guarantee that he is gone, but things aren’t looking good at this point for Bynum especially if he commands a large contract.
