With a new coach at the helm, it will be interesting to see which direction this pick takes the team. They are not very likely to re-sign Josh Smith and their current point guard, Jeff Teague, is a restricted free agent. If they don’t end up re-signing Teague, Schroeder could end up being a steal at the No. 17 overall pick in the draft.
Mike Budenholzer, the first-year coach, has a lot of work ahead of him if the team gets dissected like it looks like they will, and the German-sensation point guard could be a centerpiece for future plans.
In my opinion, this is a solid pick because many, including myself, believe that he could end up being the shock of the draft somewhere down the line. I wouldn’t be surprised if five years down the line, Schroeder will have had one of the best picks in this year’s draft.
While they made the playoffs this season, they were lacking some depth and talent on their roster to make a run and with this pick, they could end up building a winner, starting with a quality point guard.
He is an excellent ball handler and an above average passer. The only knocks on him are that his basketball IQ isn’t the highest and he needs to be more of a passer at the point guard position, but is more of a scorer.
Overall, great pick by the Hawks.
