2013 NBA Draft: Memphis Grizzlies Add Player to Stash by Selecting Janis Timma
Most people studying and mocking the 2013 NBA Draft didn’t really have Latvian small forward Janis Timma on their radar and didn’t have him getting drafted. The Memphis Grizzlies ended one of the weirdest drafts in recent memory by selecting the 6-foot-7 Timma with the 60th and final pick of the night.
One of the attractive things about Timma is the fact that he has good size at the small forward position. With his solid height, he also has a strong and athletic build at 207 pounds. Timma also moves well for a guy with his frame and his physical tools alone leave the door open for a lot of potential.
The 20-year-old is also a relatively solid scorer. He can knock down jump shots regularly, though many people think he needs to make his release quicker and work on his mechanics a little bit.
The biggest drawbacks to Timma are that he is so young and still developing right now and the fact that he hasn’t been playing against the greatest competition in Latvia. He needs to up his competition level and really develop his game to where it’s closer to being pro-ready.
As of right now, the Grizzlies already have their core in place and have shown a strong concern about saving money over the next few years, evidenced by the Rudy Gay trade. It’s likely that they will let Timma continue to play overseas, which will keep him off of their books and allow him to grow and develop as he gets older. It may not be the most valuable pick in the world by Memphis, but it’s not a bad strategy either.
