2013 NBA Draft: Phoenix Suns Grab Alex Oriakhi With 57th Pick

By Shannon Brown

The Phoenix Suns continued their rebuilding of the team by getting Alex Oriakhi in the NBA draft.

Oriakhi is a power forward coming out of Missouri, and will be looked at to add more depth to this team. The Suns got bigger in today’s draft by getting Oriakhi and Alex Len with their first-round pick. He will fit with Len nicely giving them a strong young front court. The Suns are a long way from their glory days when they were in the playoffs guided by Steve Nash.

They will be a down team for awhile, but they made a good step in the right direction.

It will be interesting to see what type of playing time Oriakhi will get as the front court of the Suns already crowded. With free agency set to come on July 1, it will become more clear what kind of impact he will make to this team. The Suns are crowded at the center and power forward positions, so it will be interesting to see what type of wheeling and dealing they could do in the next couple of weeks.

Oriakhi will have to fight for some playing time and really impress new head coach Jeff Hornacek. The Suns do have nice talent at the positions to get involved in trades, as Jermaine O’ Neal and Luis Scola are not being looked at as long-term options for the team.

The Suns have a long way to go before they can be relevant, but least they have solid big men to build around.
