For the most part, it has been whittled down to a couple of teams in the race for Howard. Aside from the Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks and of course the Lakers there is one wildcard team — the Golden State Warriors.
According to rumors via ESPN, the Houston Rockets could be atop Howard’s list along with the Mavericks.
Sources: Dwight Howard unlikely to re-sign with the Lakers. Dallas and Houston the favorites. Main issue w/Lakers is Mike D’Antoni’s system

The Rockets arguably have the best supporting cast in place to work with Howard in James Harden, Chandler Parsons and Jeremy Lin. It is still unclear whether the Rockets will try and deal Lin, but for now he remains a part of their core.
Howard has gone so far as to apparently set a date for when he plans on revealing his free agency decision. Could this be another episode of The Decision, famously premiered by LeBron James when he decided to take his talents to south beach and team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh?
It sure has the smell of ‘The Decision Part II,’ but there hasn’t been any confirmation of a live, televised event.
Whatever the Rockets wind up doing, Howard is definitely at the top of their priority list. They have been in efforts to clear as much cap space as possible for this offseason not only to land Howard but also possibly Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul. We’ll see how things play out real soon.
