Orlando Magic Should Stand Pat in Free Agency

The Orlando Magic and its fans must remain patient.

It would be easy to see available cap space remaining, and make an impulse move to immediately improve a roster in need. Notable names such as Josh Smith, Monta Ellis and a guy named Dwight Howard would all have a huge impact on any team they sign with.

However, there is a goal in place for Orlando. Magic GM Rob Hennigan and his staff are steadfast on building a team through the draft, and adding any significant names would only hinder their development.

The moves that the Magic should look to make are to buy-out aging veterans Hedo Turkoglu and Al Harrington. Turkoglu is scheduled to make $12 million in this final year of his contract, and he can be bought out for half that amount at $6 million. Similarly, Harrington can be bought out for $3.5 million instead of paying him the full $7.1 million.

Pending any possible trades, Orlando needs to add another point guard to the roster. They announced that they are going to guarantee E’Twuan Moore’s contract through this season, but I think Orlando should consider bringing back Beno Udrih at the right price.

Udrih was making $7 million last season, which is too steep a price for Orlando. However, at the right price, Udrih is a nice option for the Magic right now. He doesn’t turn the ball over and is a pass-first guy, which is huge for the Magic because he gets the younger players involved on every possession.

So, with the Magic still clearing off the salaries of Turkoglu and Quentin Richardson, not to mention the team is still paying off the Gilbert Arenas contract, the Magic should stay the course and let their young players get as many minutes as possible.
