2013 NBA Free Agency: Atlanta Hawks Should Move On From Dwight Howard, Focus on Andrew Bynum
Over the first 24 hours of free agency, the Atlanta Hawks were one of the first teams to make their presentation to free agent big man Dwight Howard. Although the Hawks are full of cap space, they haven’t appeared to be a front runner like that of the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks.
At this point, Atlanta needs to focus on their pitch to another free agent center, Andrew Bynum. Howard will likely go to Houston or Dallas, and as for the other team involved — his Los Angeles Lakers — I don’t believe they have a shot. That being said, the Hawks need to make a splash and Bynum would be just that.
The tough part about Bynum’s free agency courting has been his inability or unwillingness to work out for potential suitors. Whether that’s still due to his health or not remains to be seen. Bynum has said he will begin to get ready for the season this month, so it is curious why he won’t be workout out for his potential teams.
Either way, I think the Hawks could take a chance on Bynum even with his health concerns and make it worthwhile. At full health, Bynum is one of the best big men in the game. He is a sure-fire double-double night in and night out, not to mention a great defender protecting the rim.
If Atlanta could pair Bynum up with Al Horford, they would have arguably the top front court in the NBA. With both guys having the ability to score in the paint and fairly solid defensively, the Hawks would be set. I think it’s well worth the Hawks forgetting about Howard at this point and moving on to trying and lure in Bynum.
