Detroit Pistons: Trade Offer On the Table for Rudy Gay Includes Two Expiring Contracts

So, apparently they weren’t kidding.

The Detroit Pistons made good on their bet to go after Toronto Raptors forward Rudy Gay tonight as they have been reported to make an offer for the team’s leading scorer last season:

The Pistons were interested in acquiring not only Gay but Rajon Rondo as well this summer. With ample cap space, they very well could make it happen.

If this trade goes through for Gay, it is unclear how the Pistons would deal for Rondo. But, they would have one piece of the puzzle in place.

Gay would give the Pistons a formidable scoring option on the wing that they have lacked in recent memory. He has the ability to be a number one option and with another big name potentially added, Gay could be leading Detroit in a fight for one of the last playoff spots in the East next season.

The fact that Toronto gets expiring deals in return makes this offer appealing for them. Next year, free agency will be a frenzy without a doubt, and the Raptors would like to think they could make something of their team by bringing in a big name. They have already gotten rid of the contract of Andrea Bargnani, so they’re headed in the right direction at this point.

With the Gay offer on the table, the Pistons are also have been said to be interested in Andre Iguodala and Josh Smith. Iguodala received a hefty offer from the Sacramento Kings Tuesday and it is still unclear where Smith may be headed. In this case, they have a backup plan for Iguodala by potentially bringing in Gay and it wouldn’t be a bad move, either.
