Philadelphia 76ers GM Sam Hinkie Looks to Make Big Splash Next Summer

The R-word is being used within the Philadelphia 76ers organization.

No, it’s not re-signing. Though Andrew Bynum seems to be the only player the Sixers may show interest in bringing back. It’s the other word favorite word for most NBA teams this summer, rebuilding. Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie has made it known with his new game plan.

Hinkie’s already dealt away the team’s only All-Star Jrue Holiday (which becomes official in about a week),  it’s rumored the San Antonio Spurs assistant Brett Brown is the leading candidate as head coach and free agents like Nick Young and Dorrell Wright look to be playing elsewhere.

This seems to be a strategy most teams are following with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement kicking in this summer. Plus, the looming free agency of LeBron James next summer has got teams thinking down the road.

The good thing for the Sixers is Hinkie is taking an analytical approach to forming a title contender within the next few years.

He did manage to set the Houston Rockets up nicely this summer in the Dwight Howard sweepstakes by bringing in superstar James Harden, Jeremy Lin and a stockpile of draft picks while he was GM of the Rockets.

The bad thing is the Sixers have been known throughout history to make questionable trades and offers like Elton Brand, Chris Webber, Glenn Robinson, Kwame Brown, Jeff Ruland and the list can go on extensively. Hinkie seems to be going in a different direction so far compared to his predecessors.

So the biggest question is, what’s next for the Sixers?

The answer is to focus on hiring a long-term head coach who is either an assistant coach from a franchise with a proven track record, or a head coach from a university with recent success. Spurs assistant Brown seems to be the best candidate available.

The next step is to acquire players who can fit the new coach’s system and provide the Sixers with solid stats while not breaking the bank such as Omer Asik, Chris Andersen and Greg Monroe (all who seem to be on their way out of their current teams).

The one thing that’s not a secret is Hinkie’s ability to save the Sixers under $15 million in cap space and adding draft picks.

If the Sixers are following in the same footsteps as the Rockets, it may not be such a long stretch to see Paul George, Kobe Bryant or even LeBron in a Sixers jersey next summer.

Noel Emphatically Posterizes Drummond

With Jahlil Okafor out for the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night against the Detroit Pistons, Nerlens Noel had an opportunity to shine, and he took advantage. Noel makes Andre Drummond look feeble on this play, and that isn't an easy thing to do.
