The Sacramento Kings won’t start their 2013 NBA Summer League games until July 13 when the Las Vegas Summer League is underway. However, there is already a decent bit of excitement swirling around about the Kings and how some of their young players will perform against NBA-caliber competition.

Obviously the player that most people are waiting to see how he performs is the seventh overall pick from the 2013 NBA Draft, Ben McLemore. McLemore is an incredibly young player who a lot of people worry about his aggressiveness and maturity. It will obviously be interesting to see how he performs in Summer League.

However, another player that people should be excited to see perform is the Kings’ other selection from the 2013 draft, Ray McCallum Jr., who was selected with the sixth pick in the second round of the draft.

Last season playing for the University of Detroit, McCallum was the star of the team as he chose to go to a mid-major school and play for his father instead of going to a big school. In 36.6 minutes per game, McCallum averaged 18.7 points, 4.5 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 49.1 percent from the field.

McCallum isn’t a great shooter, as he shot just 32.3 percent from long-range last season, but he has incredible scoring ability. It will be interesting to see if that scoring ability translates to a higher level of competition, especially since he played at a smaller university. Obviously McLemore will be the bigger story, but it will be intriguing to see if McCallum shows any signs of being a part of Sacramento’s future.
