Jason Collins: Openly Gay Athlete Waiting For Just One NBA Team to Call
It’s a shame that I have to put “Openly Gay Athlete” in my headline, but in the world that we live in, the only reason that NBA fans are familiar with Jason Collins is because of his sexuality. Someday his sexual orientation will hardly be a big deal, yet for the time being, he will be known as a guinea pig and an icon at the same time.
To distract you from the story that Collins’ ex-fiance is hurt my his recent coming out of the closet, rumors are buzzing that the seven-foot center has had preliminary discussions with a few NBA teams this offseason. We have never seen an openly gay athlete in any of the four major professional sports, so any rumors surrounding Collins’ free agent status is rather ground-breaking news.
With 12 years of NBA experience under his belt, Collins has a 50/50 chance of getting picked up by a team this offseason. Luckily, the 2013 NBA Draft was a rather weak one, so older guys like Collins should be able to find a home in 2013-14. With that being said, No. 98 will have to grind his way onto any roster considering just how competitive the league is — journeymen like Collins oftentimes turn to the NBA’s Developmental League, so don’t rule out that possibility either.
Anyway, stay tuned to see how the NBA reacts if and when its first ever openly gay player signs on the dotted line with a top-notch franchise.
