Jose Calderon Will Probably Stay With Detroit Pistons

While the Detroit Pistons celebrate the arrival of Josh Smith — plus some of the other moves they have made in the offseason – they are also acutely aware that they have many other decisions to make.

Among those decisions is the future status of Jose Calderon. His status is clearly up in the air right now. He’s entertained offers from various teams, but he hasn’t made any decision.

The dust hasn’t settled in Detroit yet. The Pistons haven’t stopped shopping around, looking for players who could improve the team. Calderon obviously is a player who would be good for any NBA team, but he just has to make sure that with the current roster there’s room for him to display his talents. The best years for Calderon may be yet to come; the Pistons are hoping for that.

He has plenty he can bring to the table. In his brief stint last season with the Pistons, following the trade from the Toronto Raptors, Calderon averaged 11.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. And he brings some experience to the lineup. Pistons point guard Brandon Knight is emerging as an excellent guard but still has only two years of experience under his belt. Calderon knows so much about the game and is an excellent role model for others.

Calderon’s return depends on what happens with the other guards, and there’s still plenty of time for more trades and free agent signings. However, right now, it wouldn’t be surprising if Calderon stayed with the Pistons. That would not be a bad deal for Detroit or Calderon.
