John Lucas Utah Jazz Rumors

The Utah Jazz got the player that many would argue they coveted the most in the 2013 NBA Draft, despite the fact that they were working with just the 14th and 21st overall picks in the draft. They were able to land point guard Trey Burke, who fits their huge need at the position, in a draft-night trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

With Burke now in-house for the Jazz and likely to take over the starting point guard duties, the Jazz still remain relatively shallow at the guard position and are somewhat lacking in terms of veteran players. Looking to fill both needs, Utah has been scouring the free-agent market for a veteran point guard to fulfill the backup duties for the team.

According to Bill Oram of The Salt Lake Tribune, the most likely option for the Jazz right now is John Lucas, whom the team has reportedly been in contact with over the start of this off-season.

The 30-year-old Lucas just finished his fifth season in the league with his third different team. Over his 174 games played in his career, he has averaged just 11.8 minutes per game and has put up an average line of 5.1 points, 1.5 assists, one rebounds and 0.4 steals per game while shooting just 39.3 percent from the field and a relatively solid 35.8 percent from long-range.

If Lucas does indeed come to Utah to back up Burke, he will likely be seeing more playing time than he’s used to as the rookie Burke gets acclimated to the pro schedule and game. More importantly, though, Lucas’ experience will be huge for this Jazz team that is incredibly young after losing veteran big men Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap in free agency.

Lucas is a relatively inefficient offensive player and doesn’t impact the game too much. However, it seems like Utah would be a good fit for him as he could provide the Jazz’s rookie point guard with relief and give this team some veteran leadership.
