Brooklyn Nets New Big Man Kevin Garnett Will Wear Number Two in Memory of Malik Sealy
Malik Sealy was drafted 14th overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. Almost seven years later in January of 1999, Sealy signed as a free-agent with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Sealy instantly became friends with the Wolves burgeoning young star, a 22-year-old named Kevin Garnett.
Sealy was always in Garnett’s corner. Before games, they could be seen walking into arenas together and would leave together as well. If you caught Garnett out in public, it was more than likely that Sealy would be in his company. It was an ideal NBA friendship.
More than that, Sealy was a mentor in an inspiration to Garnett. As a young player in the league, Sealy took Garnett under his wing, showed him the ropes. Garnett also wore number 21 as a member of the T’Wolves, the same number that Sealy wore while in college at St. Johns.
Now, Garnett only has Sealy with him as a tattoo on his right forearm in Sealy’s memory. Just after the 1999-2000 season on May 20, 2000, Sealy was driving home from Garnett’s birthday party when his SUV was struck by a drunk-driver going the wrong way on the road. Sealy was pronounced dead soon after.
The Timberwolves retired Sealy’s number two jersey in his honor after his untimely passing. However, now that Garnett is a member of the Brooklyn Nets, Garnett will be able to have Sealy with him in more than just a tattoo, but by wearing Sealy’s number two as well.
Garnett is in the twilight of his career at 37 years old, but will give the Nets a boost to competing at the top of the Eastern Conference. Just as Garnett would like it and just as it was in his early days in Minnesota, Sealy will be there with him in the BK.
