One troubling thought keeps hitting Phoenix Suns fans: what if Alex Len‘s injuries don’t heal? What if the Suns completely wasted their No. 5 pick?
While there are no guarantees in the NBA, the Suns can rest assured that Len, by sitting out summer league basketball and quietly watching workouts from the sidelines will soon be healthy enough to start an NBA career in which he could prove to be among the most dominating big men around. Hopefully the Suns’ doctors are smarter than their coaches and the OKs they gave on Len’s ankle will prove to be correct.
Len’s physical condition was no secret the days leading up to the NBA draft when teams ahead of the Suns were thinking very seriously of drafting him. There’s speculation the Charlotte Bobcats were set to draft Len at the No. 4 spot, one pick ahead of the Suns, but because of the ankle situation, they decided to go with Cody Zeller.
Len had preventative surgery Friday and Suns officials are confident that it’s early enough that he should have a normal and successful recovery.
Nothing else would be acceptable for the Suns. They drafted Len because they need him in the lineup as quickly as possible.
They expect him to see some activity during September voluntary workouts and show up ready for October training camp.
As long as that happens, there’s no need for anyone to worry about Alex Len. He’s ready to become a solid NBA player. It may come later than sooner. But it will come.
