2013 NBA Free Agency: San Antonio Spurs Would Be Perfect Situation for Greg Oden
When you hear the term ‘team basketball,’ there’s a couple of franchises that come to mind instantly. You’d probably mention the Miami Heat having to put all the egos and personalities together the right way. The Chicago Bulls would also come to mind, due to Tom Thibodeau’s style of coaching and the way he gets his guys to play every night.
Then, you might place the San Antonio Spurs atop the list because of how well Gregg Popovich fits his players into their particular roles and works to each and every player’s strength.
This summer, the Spurs have made a few moves in re-signing some key players as well as bringing in a couple of other role players to join their already excellent squad. One of the more interesting guys still available this summer is big man Greg Oden who is looking to make a comeback this upcoming season, and the Spurs are one of the front-runners to sign the center.
Oden, of course, has been victim of some terrible injuries over his career and he has never really been able to stay healthy en route to establishing his game at the NBA level.
The Spurs have been atop Oden’s list since the beginning of free agency, and quite honestly would be the best-case scenario for his long-term success. A coach like Popovich would find the absolute perfect role for him, allowing Oden to thrive assuming he stays healthy.
Learning from a guy like Tim Duncan would be a phenomenal tool for Oden. For him to be able to learn from one of the best to ever play the game would be ideal, especially after coming off of such a horrendous few years. It doesn’t get any better than being mentored by a future Hall-of-Famer.
