If the Dallas Mavericks want any shot at winning now, they have got to make a couple more moves to put themselves in the prime position to do so. Owner Mark Cuban has been in the process of recruiting free agent center Greg Oden to Dallas but each team that is interested in the big man still has questions and is weary about his knees.
Other teams atop the list of Oden include the New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. Oden is said to have legitimate interest in Dallas, so it would be wise for Cuban to make his move and get him to the Mavs.
Cuban has the money to be able to offer Oden a decent enough contract to where he wouldn’t be able to easily refuse, so why not make it happen?
If Oden doesn’t work out for a year, they haven’t lost much. The big plan is to go into the 2014 NBA Free Agency period with some hope to be able to land a star free agent. But, if Oden proves to stay healthy and contribute at a level where he’s worth keeping, maybe that happens.
The Mavericks recently signed Samuel Dalembert to likely be their starting center this year, so Oden would still come off the bench like he would with any team of course. But, the more he proves his health issues are behind him, the more he’d get a chance to play increased minutes.
If Cuban is serious about making his team a playoff contender, he will have to take some risks here and there. Oden is a perfect example of a risk that would be worthwhile.
