Oklahoma City Thunder: Could Jeremy Lamb Become Starting Shooting Guard?

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

I have a feeling there aren’t many Oklahoma City Thunder fans who are too upset about losing Kevin Martin to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He wasn’t necessarily a standout part of the team last year, and seemed replaceable especially due to his large contract.

The team now turns to a likely candidate to replace Martin as the starter, going back to Thabo Sefolosha who had started previously when Martin had yet to arrive.

But, another prospective starter has emerged recently throughout the summer league play. Second year guard Jeremy Lamb has performed extremely well this summer and is showing tons of promise to be a legitimate player in the NBA.

Coming out of UCONN, Lamb was known as one of the best shooters in that draft class. In his two years with the team, he shot over 48 percent before making the leap to the NBA. Having the opportunity to really shine this summer, now, Lamb has taken full advantage of it.

His summer league play consisted of a couple of big games. One game in particular against the Orlando Magic featured Lamb making a nice crossover move at the end of the game and sinking a jump shot to win it. He then took on the Philadelphia 76ers and dropped 32 points.

The big question now is whether head coach Scott Brooks sees Lamb as a potential starter for his squad. Sefolosha is an established defender and has tons of experience as a starting shooting guard. But, he doesn’t offer near the offense that Lamb could.

Quite honestly, I think the Thunder like Lamb a lot and we could wind up seeing him starting before the season is over. Look for him to come off the bench right away and if he takes advantage of that time, he could be in the starting lineup before he knows it.
