Golden State Warriors Win Summer League: Are They the Team of the Future?

For the first time in its 22-year history, the NBA crowned a Summer League champion: the Golden State Warriors. Undrafted rookie Ian Clark (now signed with the Utah Jazz) led the way with 33 points, shooting seven of 10 from downtown and garnering the game’s MVP. Kent Bazemore, a sophomore out of Old Dominion also dropped 18 points to accompany five assists in helping his Warriors to victory.

Sophomore star Draymond Green also showed signs of improvement as he averaged 12.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and two assists in seven Summer League games. With rookie Cameron Jones showing promise, the Warriors have a very optimistic future.

With the exception of the Miami Heat who edged out a Game 7 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, the Warriors are the only other team who truly tested the Western Conference champs. And it’s no question who the leader of the team is anymore, as Steph Curry dropped an NBA-season-best 54 points against the New York Knicks and then went on to break Ray Allen‘s single season three-point record with 272 made threes this season. Not to mention the monster performance he put on against the Spurs in Game 1 of the second round of the playoffs with 44 points to go along with 11 assists in a devastating 0vertime loss. Another star on the rise is Harrison Barnes, who truly rose to the occasion in last season’s playoffs averaging 16.1 points and 6.4 rebounds a game. If Klay Thompson can continue to shoot above 40 percent from three as he did last season and David Lee can stay healthy, the Warriors will be a force to be reckoned with.

Now ESPN is splashed with pictures of Dwight Howard joining the Houston Rockets and the return of Russell Westbrook to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but they should be concerned as to who’s going to stop this team of 11 players younger than the age of 30 who have proved themselves as title contenders. My guess is they’re gonna turn some heads.
