The Indiana Pacers engaged in serious trade talks last night with the Phoenix Suns about power forward Luis Scola. Well, the deal has been finalized and Scola is now a Pacer. Indiana receives Scola in return for Gerald Green, Miles Plumlee and a 2014 first-round lottery-protected pick.
This trade is a definite win for both teams. Indy gets a veteran big to help the bench that struggled last season, and Phoenix gets some young players with potential to help in their rebuild, as well as another first-round pick for next year.
Scola averaged 12.8 points and 6.6 rebounds for the Suns last season, and if he can put those numbers up again this year, Pacers fans will be very happy.
Indiana was one game away from knocking off the Miami Heat and going to their first NBA Finals since 2000. Well, Larry Bird stepped back in and has made a big difference already this offseason. Indiana has now re-signed David West, brought in a solid backup point guard in C.J. Watson, added an underrated scoring forward in Chris Copeland and now brought in a veteran in Scola, who can give solid minutes to any team, even as a starter.
Indiana is building a strong team of veterans and under-the-radar players who can really help carry them to the Finals. If the Pacers can avoid injuries next season, they are undoubtedly primed to take on Miami once again and finally knock them off their throne.
This should be a very exciting time for Pacers fans as they are building one of the deepest teams in the league. Get ready, Pacers fans. Your season may make it into June once again this season.
