Gary Payton is considered one of the best trash talkers to ever play in the NBA. He was ruthless. Not to mention, he was a pretty good player. The former Seattle Supersonics All Star point guard and future Hall of Famer has previously told NBC’s ProBasketballTalk that he could be working with a young guard this summer.
In another interview, Payton said to PBT recently that he was a huge fan of Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard, who spent the last week playing with the guys at the Team USA Basketball camp in Las Vegas. Lillard is the reigning Rookie of the Year and a while back Payton chimed in with his vote on the exciting Blazer guard.
“I like Damian Lillard because he’s from Oakland, California, and he’s a phenomenal basketball player,” Payton said in January. “He should be the rookie of the year, he’s playing very well right now for Portland and I love his game.”
Mike Tokito of The Oregonian tweeted recently that he spoke with Lillard and the young guard said that the summer isn’t over yet and that he plans to work out with Payton before it comes to a close.
Payton worked with Washington Wizards point guard John Wall last summer, specifically trying to improve his jump shot. Payton gave Wall some insight on when to use it and how to improve his shooting percentage.
When Wall was finally healthy toward the end of the season, his jump shot looked much improved in comparison to recent years. I wonder what Payton will try and teach Lillard. Could it be a little trash-talking 101?
