One of the biggest names in sports right now is still that of free agent center Greg Oden. While the majority of the hype regarding the NBA Free Agency period has died down, Oden is still available and looking to find a new team to help reinvent his career.
At the top of the list of front-runners has been each defending conference champion. Both the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs have been longtime favorites to land Oden. Each team believes Oden could be the final piece to their puzzle for 2013.
Lately, though, three other teams have crept their way up the list of potential suitors. The Atlanta Hawks have seemed to jump into the conversation while the Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans are now rumored to be among the favorites.
There were plenty of rumors surrounding the Pelicans and Kings, specifically. It may be an issue of playing time for Oden at this point. On the Heat or Spurs he may not get as much time as he would like.
For San Antonio, they will be playing guys like Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter and Boris Diaw consistently with their reserves like Matt Bonner and DeJuan Blair occasionally filling in during times of rest.
The Spurs could definitely help Oden revive his career, but maybe not right away. There’s no doubt that head coach Gregg Popovich would help find a perfect role for him and that he would be in great hands. But, are the Spurs too far out of reach at this point? Oden will soon make a decision and we’ll find out.
