Trey Burke was a great pickup by the Utah Jazz in the 2013 NBA Draft. He was the best player in college basketball this past season and he will earn the starting point guard spot at some point in the 2013-14 NBA season.
Heck, Burke could very easily earn that role to start the season, but we will have to wait and see if that will actually be the case.
He may stand at just 6’0”, but he is a scoring machine and one heck of a field general. This past season he averaged 18.6 points and 6.7 assists per game. He can score in a variety of ways, which will be very beneficial at the next level.
Walking into the NBA and earning a starting spot right off the bat is never an easy thing, but it is not like the Jazz have the best field generals in the league. They do have good ones, but not really any All-Stars. Mo Williams is Burke’s biggest competition for the starting spot–that is if he is resigned–but Burke has a lot more upside.
Williams, 30 years old, managed to score 12.9 points per game last season and dished out 6.2 assists per game.
There are other players that can challenge for the starting PG spot, but it really comes down to Williams and Burke.
Being the No. 9 pick overall, you would think that he would start right away. However, easing young talent into the league is never a bad thing. With Burke, though, he could be one of the best field generals in the league with some time and he has too much talent not to succeed.
