According to an article written by the Huffington Post, Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade and his two sons, Zaire and Zion, will grace the cover of the September issue of Ebony magazine. On that cover, they are all wearing grey hooded-sweatshirts in tribute to death of Trayvon Martin and what he was wearing the night he was killed in late February of this year.
The issue tackles the complexities of racism and how difficult it is to be a father of a young black male. It includes interviews with director Spike Lee and actor/model Boris Kodjoe. It also includes an interview with Martin’s parents, as well as one with Wade on dealing with racism with his children.
Throughout the entire judicial process, Wade has been extremely supportive of Martin and his family. When the defendant, George Zimmerman, was acquitted of all charges just last month, the racial tension only intensified.
This trial, that has taken over every media outlet as of late, has created so much racial segregation between the white and black communities that it makes me sick. However, I am glad to see that these well-known celebrities are taking a stand on what they feel is right and just. Without superstars like Dwyane Wade to stand up for what he believes in, our world would be a very dark place. I look forward to reading this issue of Ebony and I can only hope other NBA talents will follow in Wade’s footsteps by using their superstar presence to make impressions other than just on the court.
