The San Antonio Spurs came closer to winning the NBA finals to any team in history that did not end up winning it.

When Tim Duncan missed that bunny hook shot, I knew it was a different kind of series. They have retooled and brought Marco Bellineli and also inked Tiago Splitter to an extension, but the Spurs will also be another year older.

However haven’t we in the sports media been writing the Spurs off for the last five years? And they came so close last year that with a couple lucky breaks it could potentially happen. With Dwight Howard’s change of scenery though and Doc Rivers coaching change the West is going to be wild to get through next year. The prize waiting from the East will be tough to handle as well.

Duncan will come back more motivated than ever, especially after the rumors that have popped on to the blogosphere about Duncan’s relationship with his wife. He has always been a hyper focused guy, but something tells me this season is going to be on another level. Something tells me that they will never get back, but watching them try their best will only push the rest of the West to a higher level.
