Detroit Pistons 2013 Player Profile: Peyton Siva

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Peyton Siva brings the background of a champion to the Detroit Pistons.

Having played for the Louisville Cardinals isn’t a bad aspect of his resume either, although the Pistons do have several players from outstanding national college programs, which hasn’t turned around their fortune in recent years.

But, Siva has shown during summer basketball that he will be able to play at the NBA level. He has talent as a play maker and whenever the Pistons decide to use him, he’s apt to give them outstanding ball handling skills.

That’s what earned Siva a contract from Detroit after his Summer League performance. He committed six turnovers in comparison to 24 assists. The Pistons liked the way he got his teammates involved in game. They also like the fact that one game, in which the Pistons had 22 turnovers, he made just one miscue in 27 minutes of basketball.

He’s likely to see extensive action in the preseason and he needs to continue showing coach Maurice Cheeks that he can be an excellent playmaker at this level. Right now, he’s not expected to be too much of an impact-player. In certain games he might come through. He might tempt the Pistons to trade one of their other point guards to fill another need. With Siva, the Pistons are now incredibly deep at point guard.

Siva came to the Pistons with impressive credentials considering that he averaged 10.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists as a Louisville senior. He can play under pressure as he showed in the national title game with 18 points and five assists. He had 677 assists in his career, which is second on the school’s all-time list.

If he performs during the season as well as he did in the Summer League, Siva could be a valuable contributor for Detroit this season.
