With Eurobasket 2013 in Slovenia beginning is six days, the Russian national team announced their 12-man roster, a roster that features Minnesota Timberwolves guard Alexey Shved. Shved just finished his rookie year in the NBA for the injury-ridden Wolves last season and, after starting off promising, ended up submitting a rather sub-par campaign.

In 77 games last season, Shved averaged 8.6 points, 3.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 0.7 steals in 23.9 minutes per game. However, he shot only 37.2 percent from the floor and a paltry 29.5 percent from three.

Shved really struggled to adjust to the speed and the physicality of the NBA game. He had a tendency to force things offensively and get lost in the Wolves offense. While he was a relatively solid defender, he averaged just 0.78 points per possession last season, which ranked a mere 392nd in the NBA last year.

With his poor rookie season and the Timberwolves adding depth on the wing this summer, Shved has a lot to prove this summer, particularly in Eurobasket. He has to show that he’s matured as a more physically capable player and as a decision-maker on the floor.

Shved isn’t going to be expected to be a star for the Wolves. Though he’s naturally a point guard, he’s probably still going to be playing behind Ricky Rubio and J.J. Barea at the point. Because of that, he will see most of his minutes backing up Kevin Martin on the wings. If he wants to maintain a consistent role and consistent playing time this season for what is expected to be an up-start Wolves team, he has to show that he’s matured when he takes the floor at Eurobasket and at training camp. If that doesn’t happen, he might be one step closer to not being a part of Minnesota’s long-term plans.
