Nikola Vucevic had an excellent second season for the Orlando Magic in 2012-13. The Magic need him to have an even better one for 2013-14. All indications are this will happen.
In a dreary season in which the Magic had the NBA‘s worst record, Vucevic was a shining star, showing the rest of the league that he’s an excellent inside player. He started all 77 Magic games in which he saw action and averaged 33.2 minutes, 13.1 points, 11.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.
At 7-feet, 240 pounds, he shot well for a big guy at 51.9 percent from the floor and 68.3 percent from the free throw line. It was an excellent improvement from his 2011-12 season with the Philadelphia 76ers in which he averaged 15.9 minutes, 5.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game.
Vucevic scored in double figures in all of Orlando’s last nine games. The Magic won’t soon forget a mid-April game in which he logged 40 minutes against the Bucks in a 113-103 win, scoring 30 points after hitting 14-of-26 from the floor and 2-of-3 in free throws. He also hauled down 20 boards while dishing out five assists.
Vucevic will have a major impact on this team again, but he obviously can’t carry the Magic on his back. New faces like top draft pick Victor Oladipo are also going to have to contribute in a major way. The Magic need to be deeper since teams will be tempted to focus more attention on Vucevic.
If any team doesn’t take Vucevic seriously, the Magic are going to make them pay. If Vucevic has a better season this year, so will the Magic.
