Philadelphia 76ers Could Find Gem in Undrafted Guard Khalif Wyatt
The Philadelphia 76ers are in full tank-mode heading into the 2013-2014 NBA season, in case you haven’t heard or noticed how bad their team is going to be. They traded away their only real asset this summer in Jrue Holiday in exchange for Nerlens Noel, looking to add youth as the team tries to rebuild from scratch.
With the Sixers tanking, a lot of the focus is going to be on the young players on Philly’s roster. The team will be looking to see what they can get from their first-round pick, point guard Michael Carter-Williams, and may also get a look at Noel, depending on how he recovers from a torn ACL he suffered last season in college.
However, it’s another young player that could potentially turn some heads for the Sixers this season. As the Sixers look to field a full roster and get over the salary floor for this season, they will undoubtedly be looking to add either overpaid veterans or young players with potential. Khalif Wyatt falls into the latter category.
According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Wyatt is reportedly likely going to be offered an invitation to Sixers training camp after playing with the team at the Orlando Summer League. In Summer League, the undrafted guard looked solid, averaging 13.8 points, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals in only 19.2 minutes per game. Wyatt also shot a solid 45.8 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from three.
While playing his college ball at Temple, Wyatt put up impressive numbers as the focal point of the Owls’ offense. In his senior season he averaged 20.5 points, four assists and 1.7 steals in 33.4 minutes per game. Wyatt has a great deal of talent as an offensive player, which he showed could translate to the NBA at Summer League.
If Wyatt continues to impress at camp and makes the roster, he could wind up making a name for himself this season. The Sixers are going to be bad, especially in terms of having true scorers on their depleted roster. Wyatt could come in and try to fill that niche. If his college and Summer League performances are any indications, he could succeed in that role.
