Prepare yourself before you read this statement – Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard had trust issues last season. I know, I know, it was shocking for me too. But all sarcasm aside, former Los Angeles Lakers forward Antawn Jamison has shed some light on the situation between the two stars’ relationship during the 2012-13 season. The veteran forward said that he was optimistic the two could co-exist in Hollywood, but their chemistry just never developed.
“But for whatever reason we just couldn’t get that relationship as far as them communicating and them trusting each other the way you needed them to trust each other in order for us to win a championship. It just didn’t happen that way,” said Jamison.
To hear everyone’s suspicions confirmed is less shocking than the fact that someone actually thought they could co-exist. I didn’t give the Kobe-Dwight relationship a chance, not even for one minute. Talk about two polar opposite players. Howard likes to joke around and seems to lack intensity at times on the court, while Kobe is a ruthless killer. You don’t earn the nickname ‘Black Mamba’ by joking around on the hardwood. Their personalities were just too different.
You can hate on Kobe all you want. I know he’s not the most likable player, but the dude has five championship rings to show for his work. Howard, on the other hand, has nothing to show for his NBA career besides a couple Defensive Player of the Year awards and a Finals appearance (in which his team was dominated by the Kobe-led Lakers).
I’m just glad this pairing is now a thing of the past. Dwight can now go back to dancing in pregame warm ups, while Kobe continues his mission to win that elusive sixth championship.
