The Cleveland Cavaliers have not clinched a playoff berth since the 2009-10 NBA season when LeBron James was still in town. However, after three seasons of missing the postseason fun the Cavaliers are ready to get back to their winning ways. The emergence of young players, as well as, free-agent signings should definitely give Cleveland a chance to contend for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. With that being said, will the acquisition of center Andrew Bynum help or hurt the Cavaliers’ cause this year?

The good news is Bynum is dedicated to being healthy once the season begins. He has been working hard in the offseason in his rehabilitation, while spending time in Cleveland so that he can get to know the team’s personnel.

“I moved here a week after the press conference, I’ve been here ever since — day in and day out just working,” Bynum said, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “I’m there, focused. I’m doing everything I can do to get back. That’s what all this is all about for me right now. I just want to play.”

Obviously, a healthy Bynum could do wonders for the Cavaliers around the basket. There is no doubting his skill level, but rather, his ability to sustain the work load of an entire season. Bynum is capable of dominating on offense and defense, which would allow Cleveland to do many things. With talented players such as Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters around, Bynum’s presence on the court could open up many holes in opposing defenses that the Cavaliers could exploit.

On the other hand, if Bynum is unable to stay healthy then the team is going to have some problems. It is true that he is only guaranteed $6 million of his two-year, $24.8 million contract. However, money is not the main issue. Cleveland is counting on the 25-year-old to be an asset this season. The organization believes that he can help propel the Cavaliers forward, but he will not be able to do that if he is unable to suit up.
