If you’re wondering whether the addition of Dwight Howard will help Jeremy Lin and therefore push the Houston Rockets back to their ‘Clutch City’ title teams, then you’ll just have to wait until the season begins like the rest of us.
Unless you’re Hall Of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, that is. He says this duo is ready now.
“Just the little offense I saw, that combination is very deadly,” Olajuwon told Fox 26. That’s true, the addition of Howard is monumental in that he adds to an already stout lineup. But deadly? Off a scrimmage? Please.
Listen, i’m not going to discredit Howard here. I really think he will flourish with Lin running the pick-and-roll. But am I ready to crown them as deadly when there’s no defense swarming them? No way. Besides, teams will shut down a Lin pick-and-roll because it’s known that Lin struggles to create his own shot off the dribble. Defenses know Lin is a spotty shooter, and there’s no way the team can be effective like that.
Whether Dwight shows a renewed sense of self or we see the beginning of another ‘Dwightmare’ all falls on the success of Lin, and hinges on Dwight’s ability to buy into a system where he will often be the second or third option. Time will tell. But deadly? Absurd Hakeem, absolutely absurd.
