If you haven’t heard by now, this Marc Gasol fellow who plays center for the Memphis Grizzlies is pretty good at basketball. He has an appearance in last year’s Western Conference Finals and last year’s NBA Defensive Player of the Year award to further prove his point. As if that wasn’t enough, he now has another award to put on his mantle.
Though Gasol and Spain failed to reach the Finals of Eurobasket 2013, Gasol was still named to the All Eurobasket team following the final day of action, per Jon de la Presa. Though Spain didn’t capture the championship at the tournament, they still managed to grab a victory in the third-place game on Sunday.
Gasol once again had an outstanding game in the third-place game in the 35 minutes that he was on the floor. He finished the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one block on 4-10 shooting and 8-10 shooting from the foul line.
Over the 11 games that he played at Eurobasket, Gasol filled up the box score consistently. In 30.4 minutes per game he averaged 13.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and one block per game while shooting 50.5 percent from the field, 75 percent from the charity stripe, and also went 4-9 from beyond-the-arc.
Despite an injury scare in Spain’s loss to France on Friday in the semi-finals, Gasol pretty much did what you would expect him to do. He’s one of the best defenders in the NBA, which he played like, and an underrated offensive force, which he also played like. If you’re just now finding this out after Eurobasket, you need to get with the program.
