Kyle Singler Must Produce More To Remain Key Player For Detroit Pistons

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Singler wouldn’t mind having better statistics than he did last season as a rookie, but if Singler wants to play a lot, he’s going to have to be more productive in 2013-14.

He and his Detroit Pistons teammates are getting ready for preseason camp, and Singler will find it more competitive for starting time this season.

The Pistons have added newer players like Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith into the mix. While there’s still a spot for Singler in the starting lineup, his playing time and contributions may be limited because of all the other talent the Pistons can use.

Andre Drummond was the first-year player they all talked about last season, but Singler turned out to be the rookie with the most impact.

Even as a rookie, Singler saw action in all 82 Pistons NBA contests and started 74 times, averaging 28 minutes a game. He averaged 8.8 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. He shot 42.8 percent from the floor, 35 percent in three-pointers and was a solid 80.6 percent from the free-throw stripe.

Singler has plenty of potential to be a better ballplayer, especially on a better  team. He’s expecting the Pistons to have more weapons this  season and to force the defenses to occasionally get lax against key Detroit players. Singler hopes that will open him up to be a more dangerous scorer.

With the lineup the Pistons will have, it’s hard to see where Singler will average more than 28 minutes a game. It could be slightly less because he’s playing with more talented teammates.

But that doesn’t mean Singler’s numbers will be lower. If his shooting can improve and his movement without the ball gets better, then Singler is going to have some impressive production for 2013-14.
