According to an article posted by the Associated Press, former UCLA guard Larry Drew II will sign with the Miami Heat.

After winning the John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year Award at William Taft High School in Los Angeles, Drew started his college career with the North Carolina Tar Heels. He was even lucky enough to be a part of the 2009 National Championship team. Although his minutes were limited in his freshman season due to current Denver Nuggets star Ty Lawson being the starting point guard, Drew got his chance to take over the reigns in his sophomore season with the Tar Heels. Unfortunately, his second season at UNC wasn’t nearly as successful as his first, as they went 20-17 and failed to reach the NCAA tournament. He then decided to transfer to UCLA in the middle of his junior year, giving no particular reason as to why. Drew was also forced to sit out the remainder of that season because of NCAA rules and was unable to play again until his senior year. In that season, he broke Pooh Richardson‘s single season assist record and was named to the All-Pac-12 first team.

This 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard averaged 7.5 points, 7.3 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game in his last season with the Bruins. He also shot 43.3 percent from three in that season, which is no surprise considering he won the 2008 McDonald’s All-American three-point contest as a senior at William Taft.

Drew is the son of current Milwaukee Bucks‘ coach Larry Drew. Drew II has some stiff competition with the likes of Norris Cole and Mario Chalmers holding the current positions of starting and backup point guards for the Heat, respectively. It’ll be interesting to see if this young stud can make a difference on this star-studded roster come training camp in October.
