Omer Asik Suffers Calf Injury Early On at Houston Rockets Training Camp

Omer Asik Rockets calf injury

On the night that Dwight Howard announced that he would be signing with the Houston Rockets, the trade rumors revolving around Omer Asik, the Rockets center from last season, began violently circulating around NBA circles. Everyone wanted to know what Houston’s plan would be for the 27-year-old center now that they were bringing Howard into town.

However, in the following weeks, everyone found out that the Rockets have no intention of trading Asik right now and also found out that the Rockets plan to experiment in the preseason with using Howard and Asik on the floor at the same time, with Dwight playing the four. Though training camp has just begun, it’s looking like it might be hard to carry through with that experiment.

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reported on Sunday evening that Asik suffered a calf strain during Sunday’s practice. Feigen also added that Asik is now day-to-day heading forward. Moreover, Marcus Camby, the Rockets’ third center, is also out for the rest of the week as the antique-like veteran is dealing with plantar fasciitis.

The first thing that comes to mind with this injury is obviously the fact that the Rockets might not be able to see how Asik and Dwight coexist, whether it is in the rotation with each other or on the floor at the same time. Considering that the team plans to move forward with the center duo, that’s obviously a pretty big potential blow.

On an individual level, though, this is somewhat unfortunate for Asik. Though he put together a solid season last year, he still needs work with this Rockets team in terms of his positioning and rotations on the defensive end of the floor. I’m sure he’s put in work over the summer, but working in training camp would have been of benefit to him as well. For his sake and the Rockets’ sake, let’s hope that this injury doesn’t keep him out for too long.

Harden, Wade Ice Game For Their Team in Final Min

Two of the best shooting (if not the two best) guards in the game both put their clutch gene on display last night. Within a few minutes of each other, Dwyane Wade and then James Harden both hit step-back jumpers in the final minute of the 4th quarter that iced the game for their team.

Josh Smith Fakes Dirk Nowitzki Out of His Shoes

Josh Smith has returned to the Houston Rockets via trade, and he made the most of his first game back. He scored 16 points off the bench, including this drive on Dirk Nowitzki that made Smith look like Hakeem Olajuwon. Could Ty Lawson and Josh Smith be the spark duo off the bench that rejuvenates this Rockets team?

James Harden Filthy Crossover, No-Look Assist

With the Houston Rockets down by two and needing a bucket to tie the game in overtime, James Harden went to work. Step 1: dirty crossover and blow by your opponent; Step 2: No-look, behind-the-back pass to setup the easy lay-in from Dwight Howard. Magical.
