Lavoy Allen is resting a knee injury. He will be sitting out in Spain, while the Philadelphia 76ers play Bilbao Basket on Sunday.

All the newcomers who are looking to make the roster will be getting plenty minutes against Bilbao. The Sixers will be able to truly assess each of those players’ abilities, so look for the roster to be cut after that game.

Coach Brett Brown told about his plans to reserve Allen. “We are just trying to be smart,” Brown said. “As long as we get one game out of him [during the two-game European trip], give little bit more time and try to let him play against Ok City.”

He will play in limited minutes against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday in Manchester, England. This will certainly help Allen recover without taking a toll on his knees, as he is dealing with a knee injury he suffered during the offseason.

His minutes will be cut as a precaution throughout the season, but it won’t help his chances of getting an extension or NBA contract.

His weight is another factor for the knee problems. Allen came into last season weighing 225 pounds and has ballooned to 255 at the start of training camp. He will have to find a way to shed those pounds if he is to remain on the court and show his upside, otherwise he could be more like a mediocre forward Sixers’ critics question about why he’s on an NBA roster.

Brown is an experienced coach who’s dealt with a wide-range of issues relating to big men recovering, during his tenure with the San Antonio Spurs.

Allen has seen an increase in his stats and minutes last season averaging 5.8 points, 5 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 21.1 minutes.
